What it's like

Orchard Road is lined with malls from ION Orchard to Plaza Singapura, with food courts in the basements and hotels behind them. At the western end, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has the National Orchid Garden and shady paths that are lovely early in the morning.

It's a comfortable, family-friendly base with spacious rooms and good transport, though less atmospheric than Chinatown or Kampong Glam. Away from the malls there's little nightlife beyond hotel bars, and you'll take the MRT for most sights.
