What it's like

Canggu grew from rice fields and surf breaks into Bali's hippest area, popular with surfers, yoga lovers and remote workers. Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Berawa have consistent waves, while the roads between are packed with cafés, smoothie bowls, gyms, beach clubs and bars. Pererenan to the west is quieter.

It's ideal for a young, active crowd and long stays. The beaches have dark sand and strong waves, traffic jams are notorious, and most accommodation is in villas and small hotels rather than big resorts.
