The best things to do in Dubai

Dubai stretches about 30 km along the coast: the old town on the Creek at one end, Downtown and the Burj Khalifa in the middle, and Jumeirah, the Palm and the Marina further south-west. The metro links most of it, but distances are large.

Here are the 20 things we'd put on a first trip, grouped by part of the city, with the area to stay in if that part of Dubai matters most to you. From June to September it's very hot, so plan outdoor sights for early morning and evening.

Downtown and Business Bay

  1. 1.Burj Khalifa

The world's tallest building, with observation decks on levels 124, 125 and 148.

Tip: Sunset slots cost more and sell out first; a slot just after dark is cheaper and the city lights are just as good.

Stay nearby: Downtown Dubai · ~$245/night
  2. 2.The Dubai FountainFree

A choreographed fountain show on the lake below the Burj Khalifa, every half hour in the evening.

Tip: The bridge in front of Souk Al Bahar is a good free viewpoint away from the mall crowd.

Stay nearby: Downtown Dubai · ~$245/night
  3. 3.Dubai Mall and AquariumFree

One of the world's largest malls, with an aquarium tank you can see for free from the ground floor and an ice rink.

Old Dubai and the Creek

  1. 6.Al Fahidi Historical NeighbourhoodFree

Restored wind-tower houses and quiet lanes from the days before oil, with small museums and galleries.

Tip: The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding here hosts meals where you can ask anything about Emirati life.

Stay nearby: Old Dubai (Bur Dubai & Deira) · ~$120/night
  2. 7.An abra across the Creek

Wooden water taxis that cross Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira in a few minutes, as they have for decades.

Tip: One of the cheapest rides in the city; pay the boatman in cash.

Stay nearby: Old Dubai (Bur Dubai & Deira) · ~$120/night
  3. 8.The Gold and Spice Souks

Deira's traditional markets, with windows full of gold jewellery and sacks of saffron, frankincense and dried limes.

Tip: Haggling is expected, especially in the Spice Souk.

Stay nearby: Old Dubai (Bur Dubai & Deira) · ~$120/night
  4. 9.The Dubai Frame

A giant picture frame in Zabeel Park with a glass-floored bridge across the top, looking at old Dubai on one side and the new city on the other.

Jumeirah

FAQs

Is it worth paying for the top level of the Burj Khalifa?

Only if you want the lounge experience. Levels 124 and 125 already give a spectacular view, and many people find the extra height of level 148 hard to notice.

When is the Dubai Fountain show?

Shows run every 30 minutes in the evening, with a couple of shows at lunchtime too. Exact times change with the season and during Ramadan.

Can you visit Dubai in summer?

Yes, and hotels are much cheaper, but daytime temperatures often pass 40°C. Plan malls, museums and indoor sights for the day and the beach or the souks for early morning and evening.
