What it's like

Staré Město is a maze of cobbled lanes, courtyards and churches centred on Old Town Square, where the Týn Church's spires rise over the Astronomical Clock. Josefov, the old Jewish Quarter, has synagogues and Paris Street's designer shops, and Charles Bridge crosses the river to Malá Strana.

It's the most convenient and atmospheric base, with every sight on foot. It's packed with tourists, many restaurants on the main squares are overpriced, and some streets are loud with stag parties at night.

Best streets and sub-areas

  • Old Town Square

The Astronomical Clock and Týn Church.

  • Pařížská

Elegant avenue of designer shops in Josefov.
