What it's like

Kampong Glam grew up around the Sultan Mosque, and Arab Street and Bussorah Street still sell textiles and rugs beside cafés and Middle Eastern restaurants. Haji Lane is a narrow street of murals, independent shops and small bars, busy into the night.

Bugis, just south, adds Bugis Street market, malls and the Downtown and East-West MRT lines, both with easy links to the airport. Hotels are cheaper than around the bay and there's plenty to eat at all hours. Streets around Haji Lane are crowded at weekends.
